Daria Ciurea
We express ourselves, each in our own way. That’s what it’s all about. We want to awaken something - both in ourselves and in others.
My name is Daria Ciurea, I’m 17 years old, and I’m from Bucharest, Romania. I’ve been painting since I was five, and I can say that art is the one thing that has always been with me, for as long as I can remember. I’ve always needed both a place to gather my thoughts and an outlet to release my emotions.
I’ve always held on to what I felt, to my inner transformations, to the things that mattered to me, or to themes that preoccupied my mind. I am in constant search, because I am young. I feel like I have all the time in the world to explore, and I want to use it to my advantage. Yet, no matter what I’ve tried so far, there has always been one constant in my work: vivid colors.
The shiniest memories we have, from when we could barely see over the table, from when we reached up to be held by the figures that comforted us, are preserved in the brightest colors. And yet, those same objects I remember from back then sometimes seem to have lost their shine. We forget to be fascinated by the little things, to find joy in the small details surrounding us. Through my paintings, I try to reclaim some of that curiosity, that love for the world around me that I had as a child, because I feel like a big part of it is still there. The most insignificant moments have always stirred the strongest emotions in me. They overwhelm me, but they remind me that I’m alive. They remind me that life hasn’t lost its colors and that the little girl inside me hasn’t disappeared. She’s just asleep sometimes.
Through my art, I try to preserve and nurture that rich imagination, so natural to childhood. I want to connect my experiences: the emotions tied to the different stages of my life with the way I am fundamentally built: with Romanian culture, which has shaped me profoundly, and with the way I, as an individual, perceive the world. My paintings don’t distort reality. They transform it. Through organic lines and shapes, through color, I translate what I feel or think into a raw form, processed by my own mind.
Art is an essential part of my life. As time passes, I want to grow closer and closer to it, in different forms. I have decided to dedicate my future, the adult life ahead of me, to this path. I want to study architecture at university while continuing to paint, because painting is a fundamental part of who I am.
