Artist Spotlight:
Yuki You

“Imagination is rich, fertile, and marvelous; life is poor, arid, and disenchanted. We dwell, with a full heart, in an empty world” —— Génie du Christianisme 1802
My name is Yuki, for me, pure happiness can be achieved through Ramen, Art, and RockNRoll. I’m a junior in high school, spending most of my time rotting in the concrete jungle —— Hong Kong.

I’ve been drawing since I was born, the moment when I opened my eyes and cried out in pain entering this sad and beautiful world. Art comes so naturally to me, it became my best spoken language ever since.

During the process of growing up, I discovered that Art does not just mean to draw, but it includes nearly everything —— literature, music, cinematography, performance and so on. I cannot send you my purpose of creating, because it would be 100 sheets long. However, the film «At Eternity’s Gate» explains it all.

Most of my works feature humans. Despite my pure hatred towards this species, I am still willing to explore the absurdity within them, or I’d say it’s simply a way of self exploration. All studies of human anatomy and movements will ultimately be used in my work to show the harmony between human and nature.

Nature has a profound impact on me. I see nature as God itself. As most Romantics claimed that nature is the primary fact and force, and that human consciousness is nature’s product, not its creator. To me, the true fall of humanity is the loss of our imaginative power, the vital vision, that married us to nature.

I’ve started a project recently, named «l'appel du vide» —— call of the void. The whole idea begins with a poem by me, about fish, angels and rotten dreams. Which further led to the exploration of consciousness in each individual. Making a living in an increasingly complex, regimented and urbanized society, is draining us of life and hope, of meaningfulness, and our very capacity to feel. Consequently, I want the viewer to develop an aesthetic instinct detached from any need or duty. Allowing every individual to dive within, and to experience, the subtler levels of mind and soul.

What am I in ten years?
A BANKSY employee? A cinematographer? An artist living like the rats in the underground tombs in Paris? A graphic designer for a skateboard brand? Or perhaps unemployed, doing side quests and traveling around the world. I might be dead at that time anyway, so I might just start living every day, live a bit more, and put my hands in the dirt.
