Meet the Artist:
Pedro Almeida

My name is Pedro. I’m 18 years old and I’m from Portugal, having just finished high school. I would not define myself as an artist just yet, but rather an artist in the making. My work does not involve a profound meaning or a specific message. At the moment, I’m just trying to get better every day both technically and creatively. To that end I like to explore various techniques and visual languages, often practicing in my sketchbook and getting inspired by current artists and old masters that I admire.

What interests me most in a scene is the power light can have on it. Light is a transformative element. An object or an urban landscape conventionally regarded as “ugly” can be turned into a beautiful painting just by the way light is used.

Watercolour suits this objective perfectly. Its fluidity and transparency concede the subject a magical tone and offer the painter an endless amount of possibilities. The so-called happy accidents are a big part of that. Often one is trying to create a specific shape, when suddenly water takes its own course. The outcome is nothing like one would have imagined but, somehow, it almost always improves one's work. Besides that, watercolour offers many things, from controlled brushwork for a detailed or a more realistic look, to expressive bold brushworks, giving the work a spontaneous and “fresh” look.

What will the future bring? … I still don’t know.
I would like to have a job where I can combine my passion for drawing and creative development with a specific field of practice. This is why I heavily consider studying Architecture. However, if I end up studying something that isn’t art related, one thing is certain: I will always continue to draw.
