Meet the Artist: Yali Alpert

My name is Yali, a 17-year-old artist from Israel. I’ve been drawing since I was very young—it’s something I’ve always known how to do. Over the years, the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that there are no shortcuts in art. If you rely on them, you’ll never truly succeed. Hard work is the only way forward because life isn’t fair, and trying to cheat the process will only hold you back.

When I create art, I begin by composing the piece in a way that feels visually striking—often placing the subject in a more dynamic or unexpected position than how it appears in reality. After a light sketch, I layer vibrant soft pastels, intentionally avoiding black, which I find unnatural and harsh. Instead, I use deep tones like ultramarine blue, inspired by the old masters who favored it as a richer, more atmospheric alternative. The result is a more relaxed and harmonious effect.

My growth as an artist comes from discipline: I draw every day, always pushing myself to improve. Even with the skills I’ve developed, I know there’s always more to learn—new techniques, new mediums, new perspectives.

I’ve also learned not to rush my work. Patience is key—letting a piece unfold naturally, without overworking it. Art is also about community: surrounding myself with fellow artists, exchanging knowledge, and growing together. Online tutorials help, but nothing compares to seeing techniques in real-time action, whether in competitions or collaborations. Every artist I meet teaches me something new, and that’s how I keep evolving.
